Consignment and used gear

Gear you no longer use, sold through the shop rather than by you. This is what happens to it.

WHAT WE CONSIDER

Discontinued, hard to replace and quietly excellent gear is more interesting to us than whatever is current. Condition matters and history is not a flaw. Working, not working and serviceable are all worth a conversation.

What we take: gear for listening and gear for making music. Headphones, amplifiers, DACs, turntables and the things that play music back; microphones, interfaces, monitors, instruments, amplifiers and pedals. Same standard either way: it gets graded and described by somebody who has handled it.

What we do not take: anything we cannot stand behind. Gear we have no way to test, a fault we cannot describe, or anything we suspect is counterfeit. If we cannot tell you what is wrong with it, we will not list it.

WHAT GOES ON THE LISTING

The grade on the published condition scale, photographs of that unit, and every fault we find.

If we find something wrong with it, we tell you before it is listed, and it goes on the listing in the same words if you still want to sell it.

HOW IT WORKS

Two routes: consign it and we sell it for you, or trade it against something in the shop. Tell us which you want, or say you are not sure and we will tell you which suits the piece.

Consignment is slower, and usually fairer. Your gear is inspected, graded, listed, represented accurately, and sold to someone who understands what it is. Payment is issued once the item sells.

Commission depends on the item and what it takes to stand behind it, and we agree it with you before anything is listed.

ABOUT PRICE

In most cases, we expect you to have an asking price.

What you are handing over is the work and the risk. You do not photograph it, write it up, answer the same three questions from six different people, or list it and hope. You do not meet a stranger in a parking lot. You do not get a message four weeks later saying it was not as described.

Sell it privately and you will probably clear more. You will also spend a month on it, and whoever buys it has nothing but your word for the condition, which is exactly why they will haggle.

Here it goes up graded and photographed, and the buyer has more than your word for it.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Clear photos
  • Accurate descriptions
  • Known issues disclosed upfront
  • Serial number, if the unit has one
  • An asking price (when possible)

If something doesn't line up once we inspect it, we will talk before anything moves forward.

Consignment and trade

Tell us what you have

A person reads every one of these. Tell us what it is and whether you want to consign it or take trade credit, and we will tell you which suits the piece.

Your own grade estimate is useful pricing context and costs you nothing. The grade on the listing is ours, assigned on the bench. If ours comes in lower we say so and re-quote before anything goes up.

Photographs help. Reply to our email with them rather than attaching anything here.

Used and consigned

Not sure whether it is worth sending? Bring it to the room and we will grade it while you wait.
