Reviewed September 2026. Your laptop has a DAC. Your phone has a DAC. The question is whether a better one makes a difference worth caring about in your situation.
The first step up is worth making when something specific is wrong. A laptop is a hostile place for an audio circuit, and what leaks into the headphone jack turns up as hiss, or as a whine that moves with the screen. Taking the conversion out of the computer takes that with it. Past that point you are buying sockets, control and build, because converting is a solved problem at the price of a chip.
Read What a DAC Actually Changes for the full explanation.
The DACs page carries today's prices.
When an external DAC matters
- Your laptop output has audible noise: Fan interference, ground loops, or cheap internal components can create hiss or hum. An external DAC bypasses all of this.
- You're connecting to a serious headphone amp or speaker system. The DAC is the first link in the chain.
- You need a headphone amp. Most dedicated headphone amps require an analog input, which means you need a DAC between your computer and the amp (unless the amp has a built-in DAC).
Under $150, the external DAC
Schiit Modi 5: USB, optical and coaxial in, RCA out, clean conversion. The step from a laptop's built-in DAC to a dedicated external unit. No frills. Pairs directly with the Schiit Magni Unity as a complete DAC and amp stack for under $300. Our pick under $150.
Away from the desk a dongle does the same job in the size of a thumb drive: the conversion leaves the laptop and the noise goes with it. The FiiO KA11 is the small, cheap version of that. The FiiO KA17 is the same idea with a real amplifier and a balanced output in it, which is what a harder-to-drive headphone needs.
The one to stretch for, the RME ADI-2 DAC FS
RME ADI-2 DAC FS, where the standalone desktop DAC conversation ends for most people. Built in Germany, measures as well as anything at any price, and the parametric EQ and loudness functions are working tools, not gimmicks. The cost is density: the screen, the menus, the manual thick as a paperback. If you want set-and-forget, it's more than you need. If you want the one box that will still be current in ten years, it's this. The one if you'll use the EQ.
A note on diminishing returns
Start with the Modi 5 and live with it for a year before you spend more. If you never find yourself wanting the next box, you have your answer. If you do, the standalone conversation ends at the RME ADI-2 DAC FS, and what the price buys there is the inputs, the outputs, the tools on the front panel and the build.
Streaming and wireless
If you're streaming via AirPlay or Bluetooth, the quality is limited by the wireless protocol. An external DAC only helps when you're running a wired digital output, USB from a laptop, optical or coaxial from a digital device.
